If you’re looking for a fun and scenic way to explore the Scottish Highlands this summer, you should try the Gairlochy Loop from Off Beat Bikes.
The Gairlochy Loop is a cycle route that starts and ends at Off Beat Bikes, your friendly local bike shop and bike hire in Fort William. It is a great way to discover the stunning landscapes and natural wonders of the Scottish Highlands this year. You will be amazed by the views as you pedal along the Gairlochy Loop.
The Gairlochy Loop is a moderate route that covers about 29 miles (46 km) of stunning scenery and historical landmarks. You can easily complete it in a day, and it’s accessible for all abilities, whether you’re riding a mountain bike or an e-bike. The route is not signed, but you can download the Cycle Route Map here and on Google Maps, or get the GPX file from Strava.
You’ll ride along the Great Glen Way, a long-distance trail that follows the natural fault line of the Great Glen, and the Caledonian Canal, a waterway that connects the east and west coasts of Scotland. You’ll see the impressive North Face of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles, and the majestic Neptune’s Staircase, a series of eight locks on the canal that lift boats by 19 metres. You’ll also visit the charming Pepper Pot Lighthouse, a small white tower at the end of the canal that offers a great spot for a picnic or a swim, and the Commando Memorial, a monument that honours the British Commandos of World War II, who trained in the area. If you take the Castle Commando Detour you can visit the Clan Cameron Museum, a small museum that tells the story of the Cameron clan and their role in Scottish history.
The route then takes you over to the B8004 road, a quiet and scenic road that runs along the River Spean and the River Lochy. You’ll pass through the villages of Gairlochy and Spean Bridge, where you can stop for a coffee and a bite at the Bridge Cafe, a cosy and friendly cafe that serves delicious homemade food and cakes.
The final part of the route takes you through Leanachan Forest. You’ll ride on wide gravel forest trails that are suitable for all levels of riders, and enjoy the views of the surrounding forest and mountains. You’ll end up at the Nevis Range Mountain Resort, a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Here, you can have another coffee break, grab a burger or ride their fantastic lower trails!
From Nevis Range you’ll follow the cycle path back to Off Beat Bikes where our friendly staff will be waiting to greet you. Hand your bikes and helmets back and it’s only a short stroll along the highstreet for a well-earned dinner.
