Cycling the West Highland Way

Inspired by a new West Highland Way record on Thursday 22nd April 2021 by Gary Macdonald in 8 hours and 40 minutes, Foss and Nix decided to cycle it and see how a “normal” person might find it…

‘It was a bit of a last-minute decision, but with a couple of days off, some decent weather, and the ending of the Covid restrictions it was a now or never situation!”

Day 1 Milngavie to Crainlarich – 46 miles.

The highlights included both the ascent and descent of Conic Hill, stopping for a swim on the shores of Loch Lomond, reaching Crainlarich, and my Mum bringing us a beer!

The carrying section at the top of end Loch Lomond was tough

Day 2 Crainlarich to Fort William – 48 miles.

Excited for a fresh coffee in Tyndrum meant we were there in a flash. The cycling to Bridge of Orchy was great despite the rain which continued pretty hard most of the way to the Kingshouse where we had a great welcome and some brilliant food. The weather improved and the Devil’s Staircase was magnificent. The climb out of Kinlochleven wasn’t! It was a fairly strong headwind but we were on a homeward straight. The last 8 miles including the single track to the Vitrified Fort were brilliant including cycling down the High Street in Fort William! After a few obligatory photos at the end of the way, we managed a quick beer in Spoons.

This was a great few days and made for an excellent route!”
